What's a Shooter?
Halibut in Alaska over 100 pounds are often referred to as "shooters" as they are normally shot with a .410 shotgun or small caliber handgun before being hauled into the boat. Alaskan halibut are powerful fish and because their bodies are flat they are more powerful out of the water than in. Stories abound of unlucky fishermen who were thrashed and injured by large halibut because they failed to adequately subdue the fish before bringing them into the boat.

The average size sport-caught halibut in Alaska is around 30 lbs, however, halibut over 100 pounds are not uncommon. The record sport-caught Alaska halibut is 459 pounds caught in Dutch Harbor in 1996. All large halibut are females as males rarely grow above 50-70 pounds. These large breeding females can lay up to 4 million eggs each year.
Last year the largest halibut caught on one of our vessels was a 325 pound monster that was caught on August 3rd. This huge halibut was caught on a salmon head/herring combo with a Seeker 80 pound rod and Accurate 665 reel.
