Mallory Wimsett with her 243 lb 2nd place Halibut Derby fish.
|
And so the story goes that Willy wanted to take his family out on a fishing trip with some sight seeing included. The sight seeing took place while we were still in the bay as two humpback whales appeared before us. They surfaced a couple of times and then went deep so on to the fishing grounds we went. With the first rod down, we started getting bites right away, and the black bass bit was on. After an hour, with a total of 21 in the boat, the Halibut began to bite. Becky brought in a 103 pounder, and the day was looking real good. Then it happened. The rod with the salmon carcass on it doubled over. 19 year old Mallory grabbed the rod from the rod holder, and the fish-fight of her life began. The huge halibut ran her to the back of the boat and around to the other side, and tangled up with two other lines. With fighting belt on she pumped and reeled, pumped and reeled. The big fish came close to the boat and then took a 50 yard run out away from the boat in an effort to get away. Mallory moaned as her arms burned but fight back she did. More pumping and winding brought the monster up to the boat—a true barn door! Grant grabbed the gaff and I grabbed the bang stick. As I stabbed the bangstick at the giant he twisted his head causing a glancing blow and no shot, which just re-energized the giant and he peeled the line off the reel and headed back down to the ocean floor. After another long ten minutes, in which Mallory never gave up, it was back up to the surface and both Grant and I were on target this time. It was difficult to finish the day out there fishing, because I knew we had a contender for 1st prize on the last day of the Seward Halibut Derby, and a $10,000 cash prize. But finish out the day we did, and back at the weigh in station, with a 243 pounder, we found second place was for Mallory, with a $5,000 cash prize. Bill Gleavy remained in first place with his 257 pounder, caught with the help of Captain Kevin on the ProFish. Congratulations to both winners!

Mike, Burton, Guy, John, the plumbers and the rest of the cast of characters joined me again today for our annual assault on the lingcod. We headed out with a chip on our shoulder and the not so distant memory of all of the lings that we had to release a couple weeks ago when these guys were with us. I would say we took our revenge in a meaningful way with a limit of nice lings, yelloweye and several halibut thrown into the mix.

The ladies from Lynden Transport (and Mike) joined us today with several of their clients for a day on the water. The wind was howling in the morning making it somewhat difficult to find a comfortable place to fish. These gals were incredibly hearty though and hung in there through wind and rain to land a limit of halibut. The largest fish of the day tipped the scales at 55 pounds.

Clear skies, bright sun, and glassy calm seas greeted us at the cape today as we headed out for some halibut fishing. I had my dad from Anchorage, along with my uncle and 2 cousins from Arizona and California who are up here for my parents 50th anniversary. We rolled up to the halibut fishing grounds and my cousin Cameron dropped a bait. Before the boat was even set on the anchor his rod doubled over with spunky 80 pound halibut. My uncle Ron wasn't too far behind landing a 70 pounder a few minutes later. By the end of the day everyone got into the action and landed a couple nice fish - myself included...

Wind-East 15 knots. HUH?! It was way more than that while we were fishing but Montague Island protected us from any big waves and the fish were biting so we stayed. Erica and her dad came up from Florida and did a great job of catching even though they were admitted amateurs. With a little coaching, Erica soon caught on and reeled in what looked to be about a 50 pound ling cod, too bad it was just four days before ling cod season opener! Leonard and Dick came looking for a few fish that were a bit bigger than their catch the day before on one of the military boats and went home smiling with a 76 and 38 pounder. Kevin and Marc played tag team on the jig for most of the day. Marc took to it pretty quick, even catching a gorgeous silver on it. While Kevin, being an old pro at it showed everyone how easy it was to catch fish using the jig. In the end the tide and wind started working against one another so we had to cut our trip short and went home two fish shy of a boat limit.

Uffda, my fishing has been tough the last couple days but with the help of our radios and the constant contact that we have with each others’ boats, I was able to get some info as to where the fish were and got us on some really nice 40 to 50 pound fish. Dennis and Paul stuck with me for the last two days and were able to take home some great pictures of all that Alaska has to offer including killer whales, great scenery, and of course pictures of their fish. Jacob and Larry took some time off from working on the new home in Willow to enjoy one of the most beautiful days we have had out on the water. The calm seas and sunshine made for some great fishing!

Lars returned to Seward after being gone for many years to do one of the things he loved to do when he lived here, get his line wet and catch some halibut with his brother. He and the rest of today’s crew waited patiently for most of the day before we finally found this nice rack of fish. Although the fishing may have been a bit tough we were rewarded at the end of the day with a really nice show by a pod of Orcas.

Orlando to Seward, it was a long way to come but Chris and Jamie have had quite a trip. Close encounters with Black Bears, Orcas, Fin whales and today some big halibut. Chris was hot on the jig catching and releasing many smaller halibut and then finally showing his fishing expertise when he landed a real nice 96 pounder. It wasn’t long after that, when Norm threw down a whole salmon carcass. It no sooner hit the bottom and a shooter halibut sucked it in. After a battle around the boat and a well fought fight we brought the 142 pound brut aboard. Smiles, ooohs, aaahhs and congratulations went around and back to fishing everyone went. Dan had a great day too, returning to fish with us from last years daily derby winner and found a pair of twins that weighed in around 50 pounds. Rick had to fight with Norm over his second keeper because the fish had taken both baits and was hooked by both fishermen. We finished out the rest of our limit with some nice chickens and called it a day.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and with that said all I can add is chaos. Sally and Cameron joined their grand parents on the Profish-n-sea to celebrate their 10th birthdays. There were many fish caught and three were landed weighting around 100#. With very little help they both landed a fish weighing more then them. To end the day on even a higher note Cameron also landed a 28# king salmon (this one completely on his own!)

Oh those elusive kings. Lucky Archie had one on for a few seconds and it found a way to get loose. After an hour of trolling we decided to move to another spot only to be greeted by three or four Orcas. That was pretty much the end of our king fishing although Jeff kept us entertained reeling in a couple of Ling Cod towards the end of our troll. Our halibut fishing was more successful with Brian catching our top fish weighing in at 84 pounds. Ron stayed right in the game with Brian and caught a 78 pound ostrich followed by a real nice turkey. Phyllis caught a couple of really nice turkeys today after having the daily halibut derby winner break free from her loving grasp, and Mark finished off our day catching the last halibut late in the 9th inning after a long bite-free day for him.
