Even though we are coming into the last month of our season the fishing has stayed consistently good. Today was one of those days where we fought some weather to get to the fishing grounds but once we were there the day started to change for the better. We tried a new spot for halibut which worked out quite well for us. Harry hooked into an 80# in the first hour. The good luck then turned to Tom and his father David; landing an 80# and a 60#. The day really changed when Ray (Steve’s dad and a long time charter operator) hooked into a 300# salmon shark. After fighting it for 20+ mins we got it to the boat (the first one I have seen at the dock all year!). We picked up half our salmon while fishing for halibut and we picked up the rest after pulling anchor. At the end of the day Win got a bonus fish when a greedy ling followed up his last salmon!

On his third day of fishing Win finally got what he was looking for. Yesterday he hooked and lost a battle with a salmon shark and today he hooked into another battle. This time it was with a 118 pound halibut. The fight was similar with Win pumping and reeling, the fish running and fighting but this time Win came out ahead. The salmon fishing continued to be a real blast. Where we sat we were able to see the silvers under the water. If one fish was hooked another five would be following it. Needless to say everyone got their limits of silvers in no time. The Ellison family finally got to fish with me again after a five year break and they were just as excited to be on the water fishing as they were in the years past. Many thanks goes out to Kristi who took on the deck hand roll and cut chum, washed the deck and did other deckhand chores. Toni was a pro at catching the dog fish and Dave just had a ball catching fishing and even had the chance to experience what a big fish felt like until it let go just 20 feet from the boat.

Vic was the king of the jig today bringing in the biggest fish that we have seen since June. It was no doubt a battle. This 213 pound fish ran from the back of the boat toward the front, under the anchor line and continued on for about a hundred yards. Both Vic and I were getting a bit nervous as we watched the line on the small jigging reel get peeled off with seemingly no end. But the fish stopped and Vic showed his fishing skill by being patient and fighting the fish with a nice slow and steady pace of pumping and winding. Once we got the fish back to the back of the boat and about five feet from the surface it didn’t want to move any further. Any efforts to get the fish closer would just make the fish go right back down to that five foot level. Vic continued to be patient and kept applying that steady pressure until he brought it up close enough to shoot and gaff. Lisa was also a star today catching a 25 pound king. As you can see he was a real beauty! This king was a little unexpected as we were fishing amongst a huge school of silvers. In fact, the silvers were so thick that they were biting the halibut jigs, the halibut baits and even some of the salmon carcasses that we were using. Lisa really did an outstanding job fighting this king after her arms were already tired from fighting two silvers. We knew almost immediately this was no silver. He peeled the line of the reel and showed just how much power a king salmon has. After a about three different runs Lisa was able to put him nose first right into the net. I also have to mention Elliot who darn near out did his uncle Phil who the day before caught a 123 pound halibut. Elliot was close with a 119 pounder but Uncle Phil still remains on top. Claire also made the day memorable with a pair of 54 pounders. One that fought much like the big one of the day.

What a great week of fishing and today just added to that. Onboard I had one of the most pleasant groups from Florida. We started off the morning looking for halibut and shortly into the trip the bite turned on. Buddy, Bobby, Harry and Larwence all took turns on the 3 fish between 90-100#. While sitting for halibut we were also able to pull a few lings off the bottom. When we reached our halibut quota we pulled up and headed for the silvers. The hot bite has persisted and we limited in short order. I am truly looking forward to our trips in years to come.

The weather and the fishing were both great today as we got most of our salmon while we were halibut fishing. Phil hooked into a dandy of a fish (123 pounds) with the jig rod and when he finally battled the fish to the surface I looked down to see that the jig was about to fall out of the little bit of skin that it was hooked on to. I quickly traded out the bang stick for the gaff and was able to gaff the fish. As soon as I gaffed him the hook fell away leaving me with the fish on the end of the gaff and nothing else attached, not a good position to be in! The second gaff was grabbed and Phil quickly assisted me. We drug the fish up to the side of the boat and proceeded to subdue the beast. Win was happy with the nice halibut that he brought on board while his buddy Dennis fought hard to hook one up. Kevin and Katelyn both did a really great job of catching and were just a real joy to have aboard. Our day ended with a fine show by a humback. Everyone got some great pictures.

Sam and Paul from Lynden were back today for day 2 of 3 with more of their clients. We decided to focus on bottom fish and gave everyones arms a workout with the jigs. The action was great and the variety and size of the lings and rockfish was impressive. We boated 3 yelloweyes in the 20 pound range as well as a couple 50+ pound lings. The halibut bite was also very steady though no trophy's to report on that front. We made a few drifts at the end of the day for silvers but just a few takers. Everyone had a fun day on the water and went home with sore arms.

Another beautiful day on the water greeted us at Cape Resurrection this morning. Flat calm water and mostly sunny skies are a welcome sight after the last few weeks of bad weather. The halibut action started out a little on the slow side this morning but after our first stop we decided to get everyones blood pumping with a little silver salmon fishing. To everyones amazement a wide open silver bite had everyone scrambling as they all hooked up at once. Later on we landed on a quick bite of chicken halibut to finish out the day with plenty of meat in the cooler for everyone.

All I can say is it's good to be a client of Lynden Transport! Today Sam and the Lynden crew were back, joined by clients from Haliburton for a day of fishing on the ocean. We found action packed fishing for most of the day hauling in a limit of halibut, a bunch of silvers and 11 big lingcod. The water was perfectly flat all day and the sun made an apperance as well.

Another fine day of halibut fishing! We headed out west today for a change in scenery. The first place that we stopped to fish looked quite promising and that’s were we picked up those nice big yellow eyed rockfish. We drifted around for a bit longer in the waves that went this way and that way and up and down and soon decided to look for a calmer place to find our flat fish. At our next place Vincent did a fine job of handling a nice 50 pounder and then threw back a couple of nice chickens until he found a another fish that was close to 50 pounds. Larry was a bit more cautious and didn’t want to go home without a limit so he took the first couple of nice chicken size halibut that came up. Our third fisherman came all the way from Korea to fish with us and although Mr. Lee couldn’t communicate well due a language barrier, he fished like a pro and also brought home some real nice fish.

Oh how wonderful it is to have nice weather! The calm seas helped Ty bring in two really nice halibut on the light rig. Keith did a nice job also catching a big halibut and a ling. Wade and Jeff jumped into the action catching some nice fish too while Joe and the good luck charm (Carlie) took their time getting into the game. Everyone did such a great job on catching the halibut that we were able to leave the halibut grounds early to go find some silvers. They proved to be a bit more wiley than they have been the last couple of weeks but we got some good ones to go along with the flat fish.
