It felt good to be back on the water after a three day break.  I was greeted by Ziggy and his fishing buddy Jerry who have fished with us before.  Ziggy must have been telling Jerry all the secrets on how to catch big halibut because he wasted no time hauling in our first fish which weighed 84 pounds.  Ziggy worked the jig most of the day and caught his share of halibut also.  Our main problem today was the abundance of dog fish.  Dog fish are the fish that look like little sharks.  They invade our fishing grounds this time of year and at times that seems to be all that we can catch in one spot.  So we moved and got into more dog fish.  One more move proved to be our last for halibut as we cleaned up on the rest of them.  Before we did though, Cody showed  his fishing skills by catching a couple of really nice ling cod.  The best catcher of the day had to be Faith, she caught dog fish after dog fish while we fished for halibut.  She didn’t get discouraged though and really turned on her catching when we went to fish for silvers.  She was very succesful and soon had her limit before anyone else.  Shawn was our fishing fool of the day and enjoyed every minute of the day. Whether watching others reel in fish or catching them herself she showed just how much fun a person can have when they are out fishing.

Today was day one of a three day swing for Jim and his crew of fish killers. Early in the day Kay and Diane proved once again that the lucky hand lotion was not to be doubted. After rubbing the bait with the magic potion Kay landed a 100 pound halibut and soon after Diane boated a 131 pounder. Several nice lings and a few big yelloweye and more halibut proceeded our run to the salmon grounds where we found a quick bite of nice hearty-sized silvers....

Day two for this crew was more of the same with great action for halibut, lings, and rockfish though the silvers proved to be a little more elusive. They made up for the shy salmon on the third day when they elected to stay in the bay and target the 6 fish limit with resounding success....

We had a boatload of the usual suspects on the boat today with three different groups that fish with us every season. We started out the day by savaging the lingcod with Ziggy setting the early pace in an exciting way. After a couple drifts we were off to fish for halibut. The bite was a little slower than the frantic pace we set for the lings but we managed a limit of chickens with enough time left in the day for some silver fishing. Once again we found quick silver action to finish out the tri-fecta on the fish species.

The weather was back at it again today.  We made an attempt at going out after the flat fish but were turned around just a few miles from the Cape.  The combination of wave height and wind made it impossible to make any head way so we turned around and salvaged the day by fishing for a "bay limit" of beautiful Silvers.  Even in the bay we fought gusts of wind and rain to catch our limit of 36 silvers.  The catching was grand and we were headed back to the docks with big smiles on our faces as we retold stories of our catches of the day.

The Townsend party was nice enough to come fishing with us again this year and we managed to sneak out to the island during a break in the weather and pick up this nice load of halibut and salmon.

Today we had a salmon trip booked which worked wonderfully because the seas really limited the halibut boats for the day.  The rough weather didn’t phase the team we had on board today; tucked up in a calm cove with some rain gear and the boat heater kicking we had a great day of fishing.  Like silver fishing can be its hard to explain our crazy it can be so we just let that first hook up (not just one though, six at once) show everyone why we love fishing them.  Jumping and tangles and jumping and netting and “around the anchor” and jumping and netting, and then all over again!  We landed 60+ fish in 3 hours and it was completely insane.

We are still fighting this storm in the gulf but once again were able to make it out into the ocean to fish halibut and to our surprise the conditions for the day turn out considerable nice.  I knew today would be enjoyable from the start.  We had Phyllis and Archy on board, a wonderful couple you may have seen in earlier reports for the year and also a couple that have been fishing these waters much longer then I have been alive.  My brother-in-law Chris was also able to make it on board after a season of summer work, before this senior year at University of Idaho.  It took about 45min once started till we got our first halibut bit.  The first two fish were a double, Archy hooked into a 65# and Chris was fighting a 40#.  Once landed we gave Archy little opportunity to rest because when the rod is hot its hot!  20 min later Archy was dueling with his second halibut this one a little larger then the first.  Jerry who was jigging off the back was able to pick up his limit of ling cod by this time which was a bonus for the day.  Eric moved to the jig and hooked an70# which fought like a train.  Then Phyllis got her chance at a larger fish.  What made this busy day even crazier was that while halibut fishing we had a school of silvers hang under the boat and were able to limit out on them at the same time.

After years of coming to Seward and fishing in nice weather the Swanson party found out that the weather in Alaska can be bad enough to keep them off the water.  After missing out on a couple of days of fishing we were just able to get out to today to get in some incredible salmon fishing and picked up our halibut also. We look forward to sunnier days of fishing with them next year!

A little abstract fish art to add to another fine day of fishing for Nick and his friends.  Peter was hot on the jig right away catching our biggest halibut of the day, a 72 pounder. Nick was quick to show everyone that he has been spending plenty of time fishing this year as he was quick to catch his limit of halibut within the first hour, a couple of really nice 40 pounders.  We headed out to do some ling cod after everyone filled their halibut limit but the wind and water conditions made tough so we opted for salmon instead.  As we approached the salmon grounds I let everybody know that we were in for a real treat as the salmon had been  quite thick here earlier in the day and that it should take us a mere 15 minutes to get our limit.  We were not disappointed at all as we had a triple hook up the minute the lines hit the water.  On the way home a humpback whale treated us to a breaching display and then waved it flipper good bye to us.

As expected the water at our first stop was a little confused until the current started moving with the wind.  That chop laid down beautifully in the first 30 min, just in time for Meredith (who works in our office) to catch her first fish from the ocean (of course it had to be a 40lbs halibut!).  If you have fished with us for a while you’ll remember Capt. Benny, well his father Bill was able to jig up a 75 during the morning; and even little Trace who was fishing in Alaska for the first time with his grandmother was able to land a couple of halibut quickly.  The kicker of the day was that the newly weds on the boat Pattie and Bob were given a late wedding present.  In the last couple minuets of halibut fishing Bob hooked into something large on the jig and after a 15+min battle we landed a 120lb fish.  Off to salmon fishing and was it great, the only boat in sight and constantly landing doubles and triples.
