A very large storm system has moved into the Gulf of Alaska which has kept all the boats in Seward away from the halibut grounds for a couple of days.  Today the weather wasn’t on our side but with a small gap in the winds we decided to leave the rest of the fleet and go look for some halibut.  After traveling through some rough conditions we tucked up in a comfortable location.  It took about an hour for the first bite but it was definitely worth our effort.  Kelly was first to hook into an 80# fish and then Lawrence was soon to follow.  Albina and Alaina also took turns on some larger halibut.  After sitting for half the day we went and caught the rest of our halibut and then moved on to the salmon part of our combo.  Once again we were able to hide from the weather, and limited the boat with a crazy bite in less then an hour.  With few boats even attempting fishing halibut for the day we made this one great.

Some days I think people walk onto the boat in the morning and are just destined for success; today that individual was Ryan Lane.  In the first few minuets of the day I think everyone at least on black rockfish (if not more) and then Ryan’s rod on the bow doubled over.  With the fish pealing line we cleared the rods and got him to the back corner where he could fight his fish.  After 10+ min Ryan landed his first halibut ever.  After catching a few more rock fish and some ling cod our current began to die so we changed over the gear to jigs pulled up anchor and drifted the area we had been fishing.  This is when Ryan hooked into his second fish of the day and once again topping 100#.  This time on light tackle the battle took upwards of 30min.  Once landed we quickly finished ling cod fishing with a limit and move our focus to catching the rest of our halibut.

Onboard the Pursuit today we had a great group of anglers many of whom fish with us regularly.  Booker and Monty (who have been fishing with us for years) along with Steve, Sharon, Alistair and Zack and Mike, Wyatt and Richard teamed up for a day on the water.  Since fishing has been a little slow over the last week we decided to try something a little different.  We sat at our first spot for about 45min before Zack hooked into the first halibut which turned out to be 40#, after catching a number of yellow eyes and ling cod and waiting another hour+ we decided to make a move.  Like the first stop it took Zack about 45min to catch the second halibut of the day weighing in again right around 40#.  Determined for larger fish we sat for another hour with our much luck we decided to go fish for lings.  The lings were on and 20min later we had boated a limit and move on to finish the day with chickens.

Today we braved some wind, driving rain, and choppy water to find some great fishing for halibut and silvers. My friend from high school (man that was a long time ago) Bryant and his family joined Neil, Matt, and Scott from Utah to make up the days crew. Matt was lucky early-on landing 2 nice halibut. The silver bite kept everyone busy as they traded off catching silvers among the halibut bites. Mindy, Bryant, and Shane boated halibut of 145, 114, and 110 pounds to cap a great catch of flatties. Later on we mopped up the remaining silvers we needed to finish our limit.

Once again the weather came in and prevented us from getting out to go halibut fishing. We made the most of the situation by heading out in the bay to fish for silvers for a morning half-day. The fishing was very steady and we managed to get soaked and land 35 silvers, 7 pinks, and 4 small kings.

It was great to get back out to the halibut grounds today after dodging the bad weather for the last few days. The action started off quickly for halibut with both Donny and his brother Gordy missed a halibut. Fortunately there were many more to follow. After seeing a few salmon chasing our baits we decided to drop a line for salmon too. Instanly we hooked up and chaos ensued as the anglers took turns fighting the fish amongst everyone elses halibut gear. The action got even more frenzied as big halibut inhaled the baits and jigs and took off running in various directions making for a busy day of untangling lines for Nick and I on deck. The work paid off with a beautiful load of halibut including fish of 123 and 121 lbs. and a limit of silvers.

Today’s weather forced us to stay and fish in the bay, which hasn’t been a bad thing at all, as the silvers have been bountiful.  Our group of four fine fishermen caught their limit of six silvers each in just three hours.

The Webb's are back for their annual 4 day assault on the Seward fish population. Day one found us looking for halibut and lings. The ling fishing was savage and we managed to load up on "big uglies". The halibut took a little more work and after trying a few spots we found ourselves at the local chicken hole to finish our limit. The last three days of their stay we concentrated on what they really love - SILVERS - and like usual we loaded the boat despite the foul weather. It was great to fish with all the familiar faces again (and a few new ones) although my wife now has a whole year to figure out how to get back at Ernie for shooting her with the water hose!

It was great to get a chance to fish with Booker and Monty again along with Woody who went along as crowd control for his son Hunter and cousin Kent and the Burkhart family who rounded out the days crew. We landed on a good halibut bite and Hunter (like he knows what he's doing or something) hauled in the largest fish of the day at 65 pounds. We limited out on halibut hauled up several yelloweye and a few lingcod and then it was off to go salmon fishing. We found a steady silver bite early but it slowed after a few drifts but we did manage a dozen or so since the lings kept us from fishing in the bay.

Mike, Bryan and a slightly different Centrilift crew showed up (late again) today to chase halibut and silvers. We hit the salmon hard in the morning and then ran after halibut. The bite started out good with the jigs inflicting most of the damage. After the bite slowed a bit later on we decided to head back in the bay and try to catch a few more silvers. Like a replay of the day before we did whack several more silvers and Mike boated a nice 20 pound king (after farming several silvers)...
