M/V Pursuit with Capt. Steve

Mike, Bryan, Dan and the Centrilift gang joined Nick and I today for some combo fishing. We landed on a great halibut bite early in the day and loaded up on fish in the 25-50 pound range after Mike got the action started. From there we headed after the silvers. We tried a couple spots outside the bay and hauled in a dozen silvers. Following a hot tip from earlier in the day we headed back into the bay to try to catch some more. It's always difficult to chase "radio fish" but we did manage a few more silvers and a hearty 30 pound king that ran Max around the back of the boat a few times....

Linda and Ann fish with us every year and usually prove to be very lucky. Today was Ann's day as she hauled in a whopper that weighed in at 190 pounds. She did an expert job of keeping pressure on the fish - even refusing the fighting belt. The rest of the crew rounded out the limit with some healthy chickens.

It was great to see my old friends Craig, Kathy, Jeff and the gang back fishing again. Unfortunately Craig's dad Richard who has been here every year for the last 15 years passed away this winter. They decided that it would be fitting to scatter his ashes out on the fishing grounds where he had hauled in many-a halibut, salmon, and lingcod.
After the small ceremony we found a steady bite of chickens. The larger fish were scarce so we drifted for lings and found savage action of nice lingcod to finish the day.

Family Day
|
We were able to get the kids out on the water for a few hours today to chase some silvers. Our cousins Maggie and Elyse joined our kids and soaked up the sun (like they need any more of that being from Phoenix) and cranked in some fiesty silvers. Everybody had a great time except Elle who didn't feel to well.

Ling, Ling, Ling that’s what I sing tonight as I write this. What an incredible day on the water again today. The weather continues to be very cooperative with calm seas and dry skies. We sat on a real good bite of halibut today. Jessica outdid her husband, Mike, by catching the first and the biggest halibut of the two. She wore her smile proudly until Mike took over and showed her how to catch ling cod, a real doosy of a cod at 45 pounds. The rest of the crew happily caught their halibut and we anxiously headed toward the ling cod grounds. We were very successful and caught and released many, most by Don. As he was hot on the rod and showed everyone just what it takes to catch them. Don caught the top ling of the day weighing in at 46 pounds.

Kevin and Nick on Pursuit
|
The Pursuit hosted a wonderful group of family and friends today; some local, some newbie’s and some from out of the country. Some expected rough weather pushed us to find calmer fishing grounds which brought us to the beautiful waters of the Kenai Fjords National Park. Even though the day didn’t produce any monster halibut we were able to experience some amazing ling cod fishing and even better Mac and Sam both fairly new to the state caught their first fish in the Alaska salt.

And so the story goes that Willy wanted to take his family out on a fishing trip with some sight seeing included. The sight seeing took place while we were still in the bay as two humpback whales appeared before us. They surfaced a couple of times and then went deep so on to the fishing grounds we went. With the first rod down, we started getting bites right away, and the black bass bit was on. After an hour, with a total of 21 in the boat, the Halibut began to bite. Becky brought in a 103 pounder, and the day was looking real good. Then it happened. The rod with the salmon carcass on it doubled over. 19 year old Mallory grabbed the rod from the rod holder, and the fish-fight of her life began. The huge halibut ran her to the back of the boat and around to the other side, and tangled up with two other lines. With fighting belt on she pumped and reeled, pumped and reeled. The big fish came close to the boat and then took a 50 yard run out away from the boat in an effort to get away. Mallory moaned as her arms burned but fight back she did. More pumping and winding brought the monster up to the boat—a true barn door! Grant grabbed the gaff and I grabbed the bang stick. As I stabbed the bangstick at the giant he twisted his head causing a glancing blow and no shot, which just re-energized the giant and he peeled the line off the reel and headed back down to the ocean floor. After another long ten minutes, in which Mallory never gave up, it was back up to the surface and both Grant and I were on target this time. It was difficult to finish the day out there fishing, because I knew we had a contender for 1st prize on the last day of the Seward Halibut Derby, and a $10,000 cash prize. But finish out the day we did, and back at the weigh in station, with a 243 pounder, we found second place was for Mallory, with a $5,000 cash prize. Bill Gleavy remained in first place with his 257 pounder, caught with the help of Captain Kevin on the ProFish. Congratulations to both winners!

Mike, Burton, Guy, John, the plumbers and the rest of the cast of characters joined me again today for our annual assault on the lingcod. We headed out with a chip on our shoulder and the not so distant memory of all of the lings that we had to release a couple weeks ago when these guys were with us. I would say we took our revenge in a meaningful way with a limit of nice lings, yelloweye and several halibut thrown into the mix.

The ladies from Lynden Transport (and Mike) joined us today with several of their clients for a day on the water. The wind was howling in the morning making it somewhat difficult to find a comfortable place to fish. These gals were incredibly hearty though and hung in there through wind and rain to land a limit of halibut. The largest fish of the day tipped the scales at 55 pounds.

Clear skies, bright sun, and glassy calm seas greeted us at the cape today as we headed out for some halibut fishing. I had my dad from Anchorage, along with my uncle and 2 cousins from Arizona and California who are up here for my parents 50th anniversary. We rolled up to the halibut fishing grounds and my cousin Cameron dropped a bait. Before the boat was even set on the anchor his rod doubled over with spunky 80 pound halibut. My uncle Ron wasn't too far behind landing a 70 pounder a few minutes later. By the end of the day everyone got into the action and landed a couple nice fish - myself included...
