M/V ProFish with Capt. Kevin
|
Kevin has been out a couple times this week and is finding great fishing for halibut. Today he landed several fish in the 70+ pound range, released one just over "a buck" (100 lbs.) and caught a wolf-eel... The bite was pretty fast today and everybody got to tustle with a nice fish.
I am still waiting for someone to send the photo from yesterday - they also had good luck on halibut and released a 30lb king (no king stamp).

Captain Kevin with his unusual catch - a wolf-eel. These things are rare, to say the least... This is the first wolf-eel I've ever seen on one of my boats in 16 years of chartering here in Seward. Check out those MEAN teeth! We were excited to try a slab on the bar-b-que last night but were disappointed to find that it turned into a gelatinous hunk of rubber after being cooked! So needless to say, if you catch one take a couple pictures, get a measurement for a fish mount and let the thing go....

The 2009 fishing season is underway! The weather has been beautiful and in the last couple weeks the halibut fishing has been very good. The season started out on the slow side for halibut when we ran our first trips in mid-April but fishing has quickly picked up. Kevin has been on the water 3 or 4 days a week and I've been out several times too. To this point, we've had a glorious spring here in Seward! I can't say that I remember a May with as much sunshine and calm water as we've seen so far this year.
In the recent weeks massive clouds of krill have pushed up into the waters along the coast, with it has come the porpoise, whales, and FISH that feed on the tiny crustaceans. This has helped speed the transition from early season fishing to the "full-on" halibut bite that we often see in June. Our largest fish of the season is 123 pounds but we've also been seeing numerous fish in the 25-75 pound range.
I'd like to give a big thanks to Fin-Nor and Quantum for the excellent tackle that they set us up with this season. I've been searching for a durable reel to use for jigging and the Fin-Nor Offshore 16 has already hauled up some great fish. So far, we have had good success catching halibut on both jigs and bait and the Quantum Cold Water halibut rods have shown great action. Coupled with the Fin-Nor Offshore 30 reels, this makes an awesome halibut combo that is light and responsive...
We still have plenty of space available in the coming weeks so put down that rake, hire the neighbor kid to mow the lawn, and get to Seward for some great fishing. We are extending our early season charter rates through June 5th and our hotel/fishing packages through the end of May... See you in Seward!
