And so the story goes that Willy wanted to take his family out on a fishing trip with some sight seeing included. The sight seeing took place while we were still in the bay as two humpback whales appeared before us. They surfaced a couple of times and then went deep so on to the fishing grounds we went. With the first rod down, we started getting bites right away, and the black bass bit was on. After an hour, with a total of 21 in the boat, the Halibut began to bite. Becky brought in a 103 pounder, and the day was looking real good. Then it happened. The rod with the salmon carcass on it doubled over. 19 year old Mallory grabbed the rod from the rod holder, and the fish-fight of her life began. The huge halibut ran her to the back of the boat and around to the other side, and tangled up with two other lines. With fighting belt on she pumped and reeled, pumped and reeled. The big fish came close to the boat and then took a 50 yard run out away from the boat in an effort to get away. Mallory moaned as her arms burned but fight back she did. More pumping and winding brought the monster up to the boat—a true barn door! Grant grabbed the gaff and I grabbed the bang stick. As I stabbed the bangstick at the giant he twisted his head causing a glancing blow and no shot, which just re-energized the giant and he peeled the line off the reel and headed back down to the ocean floor. After another long ten minutes, in which Mallory never gave up, it was back up to the surface and both Grant and I were on target this time. It was difficult to finish the day out there fishing, because I knew we had a contender for 1st prize on the last day of the Seward Halibut Derby, and a $10,000 cash prize. But finish out the day we did, and back at the weigh in station, with a 243 pounder, we found second place was for Mallory, with a $5,000 cash prize. Bill Gleavy remained in first place with his 257 pounder, caught with the help of Captain Kevin on the ProFish. Congratulations to both winners!
